What Is It:


This qualification endorsed by the Italian Trade Agency, teaches you the fundamentals of the complex world of Italian wine. IWP is recommended for anyone who wants to strengthen his or her knowledge base on the subject of Italian wine and gain the confidence necessary to discuss, sell, buy, and enjoy Italian wine at a professional level. 

This 3-Sunday intensive program consists of of nine educational sessions and tastings followed by an online exam. The material is comprehensive, and the course is delivered at a fast pace, requiring a commitment to learning on the part of the student. Successful candidates earn the IWP credential.

 

Earn A Credential In Italian Wine: 


Candidates who successfully complete the course and pass the examination will receive a certificate and IWP designation.

 

Aim Of The Program:


For Industry Personnel and Consumer Wine Lovers:
 
The course is particularly recommended for wine professionals who have Italian wine sales as one of their job requirements and who do not currently feel comfortable with their Italian wine knowledge. The IWP is also appropriate for wine consumers who are passionate about Italian wine but have little experience with it. In addition, the IWP makes a perfect first step to get on solid ground regarding Italian wine before tackling high-level general credentials (e.g., Advanced Sommelier, CWE, WSET Diploma, etc.).
 
 

Learning Outcomes:


Know the history of grape growing and wine production of Italy.
 
Know Italy's geography and topographical features and its geographic postion in Europe and in relation to neighboring countries.
 
Identify political and administrative regions.
 
Understand wine label terms and wine laws.
 
Understand the relationship between DOP, DOC, and DOCG designations and the significance and meaning of these designations. 
 
Know how to use the labeling terms on a bottle to deduce the style and flavor of still wines produced in the key wine producing regions.
 
Understand the differences in viticulture and vinification of the various styles of Italian wines. 
 
Learn the various grape varietals unique to Italy and their corresponding regions. 
 
Learn the correct Italian pronunciation of wine terminology. 
 
Be able to provide information and advice to customers and staff about Italian wines.
 

The Exam:


The Italian Wine Professional (IWP) exam is available online to be scheduled at the convenience of the student. The exam combines multiple-choice with fill in the blank and matching style questions. There is no tasting or oral-answer component to the exam. Those wishing to sit the exam must have completed the eight online lessons and attended the course. The minimum passing score is 80%, a score of 90% or above is required to pass the exam “with honors.”

 

Cost:


The cost for this program is $1,250 and includes:

  • 24 hours (3-days) of classroom instruction with instructor lead tastings of over 25 Italian Wines ($600 value)
  • Access to the online classroom section of the Italian Wine Central website, with up-to-date information, workbook exercises, and quizzes  ($250 value)
  • Italian Wine Professional exam and certificate upon passing the IWP exam ($400 value).
  • 206-page book is the hard-copy version of the Italian Wine Professional course, featuring:
    • Eight unit-chapters that follow the content presented in the live and online IWP courses
    • Workbook exercises
    • Dozens of full-color images and custom-made maps
    • Additional reference materials in the back that make the book useful as a professional resource and backup for the Italian Wine Central website

 

Lunch is not included.  Please bring your lunch or you can purchase lunch at Vino Venue Monday - Saturday after 2:00 pm or a few other local options near by during our lunch break
