Wines of South Africa
Presented by Kelly Wheeler

Summary:

With the first grape harvest outside Cape Town in 1659, South Africa became the first "New World" producer of wine.  From that time, South African wine had more than its share of challenges, positioning it as a second-rate producer, and really more famous for brandy production than fine wine.  However, once Apartheid ended in the mid-90's, everything changed, and for almost 20 years, South Africa has become the world-class producer it was destined to be.

Class will include:

  • Here’s what we’ll explore:
    • Old World and New World. South Africa is often described as being both because the winemaking tradition goes back more than 300 years and the soils are ancient. So the wines are often made in a more Old World style reminiscent of European wines. They often have great minerality. Yet the climate is more “New World” and so there is generally more ripe fruit than in a lot of Old World wines.
    • Variety. The vast amount of micro climes lends to incredible variety.
    • Apartheid. When the world stopped trading with South Africa, the wine industry withered for nearly 50 years. In the past 15 years there has been tremendous investment in SA's wine industry, making it, as Wine Spectator claimed, “one of the most interesting emerging wine areas in the world.”
    • Sustainability. Also coming out of the repression of Apartheid is a real commitment by the industry to social and environmental sustainability.
  • Tasting of 6-8 wines from South Africa

  • Taste a couple traditional South African dishes like Bobotie

  • All AWS courses with wine ALWAYS include light nibbles such as cheeses, salumi, olives, nuts, and a selection of crackers and fresh breads (some are Gluten-Free options).
