Fundamentals of Wine is a unique 8-week experience that provides an essential foundation for understanding and enjoying wine, as well as, an introduction to the major wine producing regions of the world. Each class provides a minimum of 6 topic-specific wine tastings and associated regional tastes which will help build the foundation for a lifetime of wine appreciation. 

In this introductory series, you will learn how to evaluate wine while touring the world’s key growing regions and tasting regional foods created specifically to enhance your experience. If you are looking to further your enjoyment of and passion for wine or even discover a new career path, this course is perfect for you. 

Foundations of Wine (formerly Introduction to Wine) is the flagship class of Atlanta Wine School. Our goal is to set the groundwork to expand your enjoyment of wine, boost your “wine confidence”, and launch you on a journey into the exciting world of wine. Your sommelier instructors will cover:

  • Main styles of wine
  • The most important wine varietals
  • Key wine producing countries and regions
  • Basic wine production
  • How to taste wine like the professionals do
  • What to look for in the glass and why
  • Matching food and wine

Course Outline:

Class One: Wine Essentials

Class Two:  French Wines

Class Three: The Wines of Italy

Class Four: Spain, Portugal, and Fortified Wines

Class Five: Wines of North America

Class Six: New Zealand, Austria, and South Africa Wines

Class Seven: Wines of South America

Class Eight: Austria, Germany and other World Wines


I really enjoyed taking the introduction to wine class with you over the last two months. I learned more from your pictures and stories than I have learned from any book or article. People enjoy it when I re-tell the stories and anecdotes, and more importantly the human-ness that it injects into the enigma of wine.
