Seeing his work being processed into an item that would be shipped around the South East gave him a sense of pride in his community. At age 15, in Junior High School, his end-of-year project for agriculture studies was to shoot a hog and cook it in a cinder block pit. His role in the project earned him an A!

In his early 20’s, he worked as a professional guitarist, wrote his own music, played in classy restaurants and bars, and learned about wine while performing in these places. (Rumor has it he was offered free drinks and took advantage of the wine list often).

Brian worked as a coffee buyer and wine buyer in 1999-2002 at a gourmet food store in Gastonia, NC and learned a lot about geographic influences on berries and decided that the wine business was where his heart was. He then went to work in the oldest wine shop in Charlotte, NC and managed a very large bottle selection and inventory. He met a lot of important winemakers, importers, brokers, and producers there and gained a lot of knowledge about the wine business as a whole. Brian left the retail side of things, moved to Asheville, NC and worked for a wholesale company covering the entirety of Western North Carolina selling fine wine until 2006 when he moved to Atlanta to work for a larger wholesale company. He eventually retired from the wine industry in 2014.

When Brian first moved to Atlanta, he looked for barbecue and never found anything that he liked so he started cooking it himself. His best friend from Texas opened a barbecue restaurant in Atlanta in 2008/2009 and he quickly fell in love with Central Texas Barbecue and learned how to cook brisket before the phenomenon took over the world in 2012 and every barbecue restaurant wanted to have brisket on the menu because it was so popular! He started cooking in his backyard for small gatherings and the gatherings got bigger….so did the equipment. The local demand for his barbecue inspired him to leave the wine business and start a catering business focusing on all-wood cooked American barbecue with simple sides made fresh.

Their catering business was very successful, and they quickly realized they needed an everyday brick and mortar location to keep up with demand for catering, as well as, offer daily service for their sit-down guests. In December 2018, they were forced to close due to parking issues. Brian then took a temporary gig as head consultant for Woods Chapel BBQ in Summerhill, Atlanta, GA and after his stint there, he got back into his own barbecue catering business, Keenan’s Pit Bar-B-Que. This year they’re celebrating 13 years of serving wood fired, pit cooked barbecue in Roswell GA.
