4MAY03 Banfi “La Pettegola” VERMENTINO, Tuscany, Italy 2024 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $22 (member price $19)
100% Vermentino 13.5% ABV
“Pettegola” has dual meanings in Tuscany: 1) a shorebird known for inhabiting the Tuscan coast 2) gossipy ladies of a certain age. The fruit for Pettegola is from Maremma, near the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. While still medium-bodied, Pettegola is a bit lusher than Sardenian Vermentino. Considering the location of the vineyards, it’s made for summer seafood dishes! I remember gulping a glass or two of La Pettegola while eating Pesce Crudo there a few years ago. Stainless steel aging. White grapefruit, apricot, green apple, almond, touch of salinity, brisk acidity.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Enjoy this tangy white as an aperitif or paired with fresh seafood like antipasto of sautéed soft shell crabs drizzled with white wine sauce and seasoned with Old Bay; seafood linguine tossed with fresh pesto; flash fried calamari; and Panzanella di Mare, a traditional dish of toasted ciabatta topped with tomato, clams, mussels, shrimp, squid and olive oil; summer salads like classic Caprese; and light fare such as chicken under a brick with grilled fennel. Or simply savor this refreshing white with a platter of Italian cheeses, antipasti and Tuscan style garlic bread.
