4MAY09 Villa Mangiacane SANGIOVESE, Chianti Classico Riserva, Tuscany, Italy 2018 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $25 (member price $22)
100% Sangiovese 14.0% ABV
In the 14th century, the Machiavelli family built the structure that houses the winery. Legend has it that Niccolò Machiavelli wrote “The Prince” next door to Villa Mangiacane. The Latin translation for Mangiacane is “Great Dog”, because of the Mastiffs that used to guard the property. The fruit is from San Casciano in Val di Pesa. What separates Chianti Classico Riserva from Chianti Classico is that the Riserva has more stringent aging requirements and minimum ABV. 30% sees 12 months in new French oak, then four months in amphora. The other 70% sees 16 months in 2nd use French oak. After bottling, the wine ages another nine months before release. Red cherry, violet, balsamic, dark chocolate, coffee
Food Pairing Suggestions:
If you’re looking for a “perfetto” pairing, with this Riserva, whip up classic Italian meals like homemade fettuccine with fresh Bolognese, a juicy bistecca Fiorentina, herb‐crusted pork loin, meaty lasagna, roasted wild boar over polenta, chicken marsala or cheesy ravioli with wild mushrooms. For a simply sublime pairing with this Italian stallion, try a succulent roast, like a juicy rack of lamb or venison. You also can’t go wrong with a platter of salumi, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorino and other regional cheeses.
