4SEP11 Bodega Garzón “Reserva” TANNAT, Garzón, Atlantida, Uruguay 2022 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $22 (member price $19)
100% Tannat 14.0% ABV
In 129 months of wine club, this may be only the 2nd wine from Uruguay featured. This Atlantic Ocean facing country’s wines have graced our retail shelves and been part of wine festivals, but have had minimum presence in the club. (My bad!) Uruguay is just north of Argentina, but the elevation is much lower than that of Mendoza, Salta and other premium regions. The Atlantic Ocean has a bigger influence in moderating the temperatures in Uruguay than of its southern neighbor. As Argentina has come to own Malbec, Tannat is the champion variety of Uruguay. Bodega Garzón has their own appellation, 11 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Fermented in concrete, aged for 12 months in large French oak barrels. Black plum, black raspberry, vanilla, nutmeg, minerality.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Enjoy this South American beauty with duck confit served over mesclun greens, classic cassoulet, Basque style tuna, Italian sausage penne, wild boar ragu tossed tagliatelle, seared venison loin over herbed risotto, oxtail ravioli with shaved Pecorino, Tandoori chicken with white rice, gnocchi alla parisienne tossed with wild mushrooms, lamb burgers smothered with goat cheese, caramelized onions and bacon, seared duck breast with red wine reduction, and classic steak au poivre with roasted brussels sprouts. This red is also the perfect partner for mature and aged cheeses such as Parmesan, aged goat Gouda, Comté, Roquefort, and Chaumes.
