6AUG08 Hearst Ranch “Randolph“ RED BLEND, Paso Robles, California 2022 (F)
4 and 6 bottle levels $24 (member price $21)
Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petite Sirah 14.7% ABV
As befitting a wine estate based in San Simeon, this wine is named after William Randolph Hearst, the colorful and controversial newspaper tycoon, and the inspiration for the title character in Citizen Kane. He claimed to be the reason the Spanish American war started, but historians have rejected that notion. Unlike Mr. Hearst, who would say anything to get attention and shift his viewpoints depending on which way the wind blew, this Randolph wine is a pleasing wine. Smooth, supple, fruit forward with a tangy finish. Blackberry, blueberry, red cherry, eucalyptus, vanilla, cinnamon. 5% new American Oak, 10% once used French Oak & 85% neutral oak. This is the August burger wine.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
This robust, yet elegant red pairs beautifully with gourmet burgers, rare ribeye steaks topped with Gorgonzola butter, lamb tagine with mint pesto cous cous, pork chops smothered in wild mushroom and wine sauce, BBQ ribs, grilled wild boar sausage, spicy Thai curry pulled pork, melt-in-your-mouth brisket, braised beef short ribs, spaghetti bolognese, sausage pizza, steak tartare, smoked duck breast, and grilled lamb lollipops. This voluptuous blend is equally delicious with goat Gouda, dry Sonoma Jack or slightly sweet Italian Piave.
