Château Massiac’s history dates back to the Roman Empire when the area was colonized by the Romans using the nearby Mediterranean port (30 kilometers) of Narbonne as an access point. In the 17th Century, two brothers from Massiac in the Auvergne region traversed the area in service to the King of Spain and eventually settled at this spot situated almost precisely halfway between the clock towers of the villages of Azille and Rieux Minervois. During the French Revolution, the chateau was burned to the ground. Aged in tank, it’s meant to be fruit forward, unlike its more rustic brethren. Tangy black fruit on the attack, grippy tannins on the finish, with hints of leather and garrigue.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Pair this rouge with thyme roasted duck breast and caramelized shallots, roast veal loin with French lentils, garlicky roast beef tenderloin, Pappardelle bolognese, pork loin wrapped with Applewood smoked bacon, braised short ribs with root veggies, classic Ratatouille and roasted leg of lamb served with rosemary and garlic and parsnips. This red is also an ideal match for robust cheeses like Roquefort, aged Provolone, Glouchester and Roncal.
