6SEP09 Château Bentejac MERLOT, Bordeaux, France 2020
4 and 6 bottle levels $21 (member price $18)
90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon 13.5% ABV
Château Bentéjac is located on the slopes and plateaus of Asques, a hamlet just north of the Dordogne River as it makes an abrupt right turn heading toward the Gironde River and the Atlantic Ocean. Château Bentéjac is part of the Famille JM Cazes portfolio, best known for Château Lynch Bages. It’s downstream of Fronsac and upstream of Côtes de Bourg, with similar soils of clay and limestone. It gets more Atlantic exposure than St. Émilion. Blackberry, red raspberry, pomegranate, with hints of earth and graphite. Aged in concrete and stainless steel.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Pair this French favorite with thyme roasted duck breast and caramelized shallots, rosemary and garlic grilled leg of lamb with parsnips, roast veal loin with French lentils, garlicky grilled beef tenderloin, saucy Pappardelle bolognese, braised lamb shoulder with fennel, pepper crusted ribeye over smashed garlic potatoes, pork loin wrapped with Applewood smoked bacon, braised short ribs with root veggies, classic Ratatouille and braised beef and mushrooms drizzled with a red wine pan sauce over potato leek hash. This red is also an ideal match for robust cheeses like Roquefort, aged Provolone, Glouchester, Beaufort, Comté and Roncal.
