Pessimist is different this vintage. We’ve carried it on and off for years, and I’ve come to know it as a juicy fruit bomb. The 2022 edition is leaner than before and has fairly grippy tannins. It’s a red blend from brothers Georges and Daniel Daou, whose family left Lebanon because of their civil war, went to college in San Diego, made the big bucks, but never lost their dream of owning a winery. DAOU Vineyards is known for their big cabs, but The Pessimist has been a huge hit for them, especially at its modest price point. 10 months in French oak barrels (50% new). Blueberry, raspberry, dark chocolate, olive. For those joining VV in Paso Robles this August, we plan to visit DAOU.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Pair this seductive blend with slow cooked lamb with tomato ragu, barbecue pork belly with wild herbs, pork stew, saucy ribs, spice rubbed roasted leg of lamb with roasted Brussels sprouts, blackened filet smothered with blue cheese and onions, bacon-wrapped pork, beef Strogonoff, or braised short ribs with zinfandel jus over creamy polenta. For a decadent after dinner treat try a glass with warm dark chocolate lava cake, truffles or all by itself! Or kick back with a plateful of charcuterie and strongflavored cheeses like Dry Sonoma Jack, Glouchester, smoked Gouda and Roncal.
