Cairanne (“Care-Ahn”) is northeast of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and north of Gigondas. It was elevated to AOC status in 2016. Before that, their wines were labeled Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne. Famille Roche has been making wine in Cairanne since the 17th century. The vines for their Cairanne range from 40 to 105 years old. The Grenache is planted in red clay, the Syrah and Carignan in marl. The Syrah sees 10 months in used French oak, the Grenache and Carignan are aged in tanks. Blackberry, black plum, white pepper, tarragon, violets, dried meat. At 15% ABV, it’s a mouthful, and is more refreshing served at 60 F. This is a 1.5-liter Magnum!
