Chalk Hill Winery CHARDONNAY, Russian River Valley, Sonoma, California 2022
4 and 6 bottle levels $23 (member price $20)
100% Chardonnay 14.0% ABV
Like Chozas Carrascal, Chalk Hill Winery has its own appellation (Chalk Hill AVA), tucked between Alexander Valley, Knights Valley and Russian River Valley on the eastern flank of Sonoma County, just east of Windsor. It’s a “blink and you’ll miss it” area, easily traversed by car in 5-10 minutes. Chalk Hill was started as a family winery, and in 2010 became part of a larger family business (Foley Family). Courtney Foley (daughter of Bill) is hands on with Chalk Hill, and shares winemaking responsibilities. The fruit for this Chard comes from Russian River Valley, just on the other side of the 101 from Chalk Hill. 9 months in Hungarian oak (10% new, 20% 2nd use). Creamy baked apple, lemon custard, golden peach, hazelnut tart.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
You’ll want to stock up on this incredibly food-friendly holiday wine. Enjoy it with a wide range of dishes from lobster in coriander saffron broth with citrus confit, seared scallops with lemon aioli, fried Calamari nestled on an endive salad drizzled with passion fruit vinaigrette to pan-seared skate with beurre blanc, lobster drizzled with drawn butter and shrimp-topped Alfredo fettuccine. This refreshing white is also the perfect accompaniment to a cheese platter of hard-aged or wash-rind cheeses like Gouda, Manchego and Brie.
