4MAY04 Weingut Markus Huber SPARKLING ROSÉ, Traisental, Niederösterreich, Austria 2022 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $23 (member price $20)
Zweigelt, Pinot Noir 12.2% ABV
Markus Huber comes from a 10 generation wine growing family in the Traisental Valley, south of Kamptal and west of Vienna. He cut his teeth working his parent’s vineyards, then gained experience in South Africa before returning home. The Traisental Valley has the most limestone rich soils of Lower Austria, and one of the highest diurnal swings. Markus’ bread & better are his Erste Lage (Grand Cru) Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings. The label reads NV, but the fruit was harvested in 2022. This is a Charmat Method sparkling, preserving a fruit-forward style. Bright strawberry, red cherry, cranberry. It’s a dry wine, but there is a hint of sweetness on the finish, making it perfect for Mother’s Day Brunch.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Enjoy these elegant bubbles paired with anything from fresh oysters, watermelon and feta salad, spring pasta dishes and melted Brie and prosciutto topped flatbread to panko-crusted chicken over mixed greens with a sliver of Brie and tomato and mozzarella flatbread to grilled chicken and peppers over rice and pork braised in champagne vinegar over creamy edamame risotto. These bubbles also perfectly complement Brillat-Savarin and soft goat cheeses.
