4DEC07 Vera de Estenas BOBAL, Utiel-Requena, Valencia, Spain 2021 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $21 (member price $18)
100% Bobal 13.8% ABV
Utiel-Requena is a DO about one hour inland from Valencia. High elevation, and a large diurnal swing help explain the thick skin and high acid of the grapes. Summer days can be scorching, but the Solano (local wind) cools off the vineyards at night. This is an old vine wine (50+ years), with en vaso (bush-trained) vines – to protect the grapes from the sun. Bobal was traditionally used as a blending grape, but smart producers realize that Bobal grown at high elevation (like Vera de Estenas at 2600 feet) can produce profound wines. This is a bright and fresh wine, with spicy black raspberry, tangy cranberry, red raspberry, woodsmoke, minerality. Aged in concrete.
