4FEB11 Yalumba “Samuel’s Collection Bush Vine” GRENACHE, Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia 2022 (F)
4 and 6 bottle levels $23 (member price $20)
100% Grenache 14.5% ABV
Yalumba is the oldest family owned winery Down Under, with their first vineyards planted in 1849, and wine produced shortly thereafter. We’ve featured their wines on and off in the club and on our shelves. This Bush Vine Grenache was one of the blind tasting wines in the 14th Annual Somm Smackdown. I didn’t win, partially because I whiffed on this wine. The alcohol was nicely integrated, and there was nice acid and savory notes, leading me to conclude that the wine was from Europe…oops! The vines range from 55 to 98 years old. Aged in stainless steel. Red cherry, mulberry, violet, oregano, cinnamon.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Enjoy this savory red with steak au poivre over sauteed kale, grilled burgers topped with caramelized onion, smoky bacon and sharp cheddar, Asian spiced pork kebabs, flatbread topped with Fontina and onion confit, sausage manicotti, maple-barbecued spiced chicken thighs, grilled peppered pork loin with mustard sauce, beef and pork empanades, skirt steak and green pepper fajitas, Mongolian style lamb and even traditional spaghetti and meatballs topped with shaved Parmesan. Or simply savor a glass with a sliver of Époisses or aged Cheddar.
