4FEB12 Aragoneses Bodegas “Garnacha Centenario“ GARNACHA, Campo de Borja, Aragon, Spain 2021 (O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $21 (member price $18)
100% Garnacha 14.5% ABV
Campo de Borja is home to some of Spain’s most powerful wines, with its high altitude vineyards and large diurnal shift helping to create ripe grapes with thicker skins. Some of the big boys of international wine have invested in Campo de Borja in the last two decades, producing wines at double and triple these prices. Aragonesas Bodegas is a cooperative founded in 1984. Two of their vineyards (Monte Alto and La Sarda) have arid slate soil, perfect for Garnacha vines to flourish at ages over 100 years old (hence “Centenario”). Aged 4 months in new French oak barrels. Baked red cherry, cranberry, violet, balsamic, roasted tomato
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Pair this Spanish red with pulled pork barbecue, braised lamb and vegetables, beef short ribs over cheesy jalapeño grits, grilled wild boar sausage, blueberry-glazed venison loin over cheesy scalloped potatoes and beef cheek ravioli with shaved Manchego and beef consommé. This Spanish gem is simply divine with a tray of regional cheeses like Garrotxa, Zamarano, Cabrales and Idiazabal. Or take it up a notch and add some fig confit drizzled with a balsamic vinegar reduction, fresh honeycomb, dried apricots, caramelized walnuts and Serrano ham.
