4JAN03 Cantine Fina “Kika” TRAMINER BLEND, Sicily, Italy (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $22 (member price $19)
90% Traminer, 10% Sauvignon Blanc 13.5% ABV
The VV crew visited Cantine Fina, as the wines are tasty, and it’s fairly close to Marsala. (Look for VV to return to Sicily in September.) Cantine Fina is owned by Bruno Fina and his adult children. The winery and vineyards are near Trapani, close to Marsala, in western Sicily. It’s a warm area, with palm trees dotting the property, but Mr. Fina’s vineyards are in higher elevations with northern exposures, and they pick early, for good acidity. Aged in stainless steel before resting in the bottle. Kika makes me think of Hawaii, as roasted pineapple is the dominant note, along with grapefruit, and a slightly chalky finish. Aged in stainless steel. This has enough fruit to fool you into thinking it’s sweet, but it’s bone-dry.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Savor this elegant and aromatic white with seafood risotto, crispy fried fish, Italian frittatas, butternut squash ravioli with brown butter sauce, grilled swordfish with a Sicilian-style relish of currants and pine nuts, smoked trout served over asparagus risotto, Indian curries over white rice, duck à l’Orange, cod drizzled with black truffle vinaigrette, eggplant Parmesan, tandoori chicken, lamb and apricot tagine, classic quiche Lorraine, smoked salmon scramble and even Kung Pao shrimp. The cheese possibilities are endless too - try a glass with Roquefort, Capocollo, Stilton, Gorgonzola, Gouda, Boursin, or even Swiss cheese.
