4JAN12 Ferrari-Carano “Siena“ RED BLEND, Sonoma County, California 2022 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $24 (member price $21)
Sangiovese, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon 14.8% ABV
Ferrari-Carano was founded in 1981 in the north end of Dry Creek Valley. From the back balcony of their winery, you’re greeted with spectacular south-facing gardens. Ferrari-Carano was family owned and operated for decades and was recently became part of Foley Family. Siena started as an homage to their Italian heritage, becoming one of California’s first “Cal-Ital” blends. About 20 years ago, I was part of a group opening a golf club near Houston. The owners of the club tried getting Ferrari-Carano to add an extra “n” to the name of the wine to match the name of their club (Sienna). Ferrari-Carano politely declined, citing the town in Tuscany as inspiration. In recent years, the blend has shifted. While Sangiovese is still the leader, the majority of the blend is familiar varietals. Black plum, red plum, mocha, vanilla, caramel. Aged 10 months in Hungarian & French oak barrels (20% new)
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Pair this seductive red with slow cooked lamb with tomato ragu, barbecue pork belly with wild herbs, pork stew, saucy ribs, spice rubbed roasted leg of lamb with roasted Brussels sprouts, blackened filet smothered with blue cheese and onions, bacon-wrapped pork, beef Strogonoff, or braised short ribs with zinfandel jus over creamy polenta. For a decadent after dinner treat try a glass with warm dark chocolate lava cake or truffles. Or just kick back with a plateful of charcuterie and strong-flavored cheeses like Dry Sonoma Jack, Glouchester, smoked Gouda and Roncal.
