The family wine journey in Yecla began in 1850, when Pedro Candela Soriano began producing and selling wine. Today, his great grandsons Antonio and Alfredo Candela with Bodegas Barahonda. Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) is their workhorse grape, in their limestone / chalk soil. For this Carro (“Cart“), they include Syrah for pepper and power and Merlot for smoothness. It’s comparable to a Côtes du Rhône. All the fruit is estate. 40+ year old vines. The varietals are fermented and aged in stainless steel separately, blended, then aged for a few more months. Serve this delicious blend with sausage, mushroom and Gruyere topped flatbread, seared venison loin with juniper berries, Hawaiian style beef short ribs and bacon potato salad, classic lamb cassoulet, truffled white bean soup, Moroccan lamb tagine over couscous, braised beef cheeks with mushrooms and red wine, grilled lamb sausage over cheesy polenta, pulled chicken BBQ, lamb Shawarma, and caramelized onion, bacon and Gruyere pizza. This versatile blend is also heavenly with smoked Gouda, Spanish Idizabal, Ossau-Iraty, Bleu d’Auvergne, Tomme de Savoie or a peppercorn-crusted Pecorino Pepato.
