4JUN02 Albert Bichot ALIGOTÉ, Burgundy, France 2022 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $22 (member price $19)
100% Aligoté 12.5% ABV
White Burgundy means Chardonnay, right? It’s true that 99% of white grapes grown in Burgundy are Chardonnay, but Pinot Gris and Aligoté are also allowed. Aligoté was prominent in Burgundy until phylloxera hit in the late 1800’s. If you’ve had a Kir, you may have tried Aligoté: pour ½ oz Creme de Cassis into a white wine glass, top with chilled Aligoté, with an optional lemon twist garnish. Albert Bichot is known for excellent value, as evidenced by their multiple awards from Decanter magazine. Most of the fruit comes from Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. Similar to Burgundian Chardonnay, but a little leaner. Calcareous soil, stainless steel aging. Notes of green apple, dried herbs, white flowers, hazelnut.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
While excellent as an aperitif, this white is also the perfect partner for a mixed green salad topped with sliced avocado and grilled shrimp, simply prepared fish dishes, fresh oysters Rockefeller, clam chowder, garlicky escargot on sourdough, bison burgers, mussels with pistou sauce, tangy goat cheese tart, poached sole fillet with white wine sauce, Spaghetti with clams and lemon and grilled sardines. For something different, try it with blackcurrant liqueur for a tasty twist on a Kir cocktail!
