4MAY08 El Porvenir de Cafayate “Amauta” TANNAT, Cafayate, Salta, Argentina 2023 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $22 (member price $19)
100% Tannat 14.0% ABV
While best known for Torrontes, Salta also produces excellent red wines. In northwestern Argentina (close to Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile), the vineyards are some of the highest altitude in the world and benefit from a large diurnal swing, with hot days and cold nights, letting the grapes rest & relax overnight during the growing season. Founded in 2000 by the Romero-Marcuzzi family, the winery is currently run by Lucia Romero-Marcuzzi. Tannat can be very tannic, but when aged in stainless steel (like this wine), the fruit forward characteristics are front and center. Amauta means “Wise One“ in the local dialect. Tangy black raspberry, black plum, rose petals, spice. Best if decanted for 15+ minutes before serving
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Enjoy this tangy Tannat with chili-rubbed venison, espresso-rubbed rib eye steaks, barbecued spiced lamb chops, lamb and apricot tagine, smoky fall-apart ribs, peppered steaks with Chimichurri, wild boar sausage and peppers, and grilled burgers topped with aged cheddar, Applewood smoked bacon and caramelized onions. Or simply savor a glass with aged cheeses like Spanish Manchego and Argentine Parmesan or herbed cheeses.
