4NOV10 Bodega Garzón “Reserva” MARSELAN, Garzón, Atlantida, Uruguay 2022 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $23 (member price $20)
100% Marselan 13.5% ABV
Marselan is a cross between Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. It was developed in 1961 in France, with the hope that it would produce high yields and large berries. In fact, Marselan is a small berry, so the project was shelved for 30+ years. It made the news in 2019, becoming one of the allowed varieties in Bordeaux, in an effort to maintain quality in the face of rising temperatures and droughts. Look for an appearance at VV by Mele Sosa (their Enologist) in spring of 2025. Like the Tannat in September, the Marselan comes from Bodega Garzón’s estate vineyards, 11 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Fermented in concrete, aged for 12 months in large French oak barrels. Red raspberry, red cherry, black cherry, mint, eucalyptus, soft tannins. GOBBLE GOBBLE
