6APR04 Barnard Griffin CHARDONNAY, Columbia Valley, Washington 2022 (F)
4 and 6 bottle levels $21 (member price $18)
100% Chardonnay 13.4% ABV
Rob Griffin grew up in the Napa Valley knowing he wanted to be a winemaker and enrolled at UC Davis at the age of 17. After gaining experience in Napa he moved to Columbia Valley, which at the time was considered to be the “wild west” of winemaking terroir. Rob Griffin and his wife Deborah Barnard’s first vintage consisted of just one truckload of fruit and a rented cellar back in 1983. Today, almost half of their production comes from their estate, Caroway Vineyard, and the rest is sourced from seven other vineyards throughout the Columbia Valley, Columbia Gorge and Red Mountain AVAs. They call this Chard “girl who brought us to the dance” because it was their biggest seller and helped their business survive the first few years. Partial malolactic fermention and 33% aged in French oak explain the touches of butter and cream. Pear, apricot, lemon, butter, vanilla. Great balance for a modestly priced Chard.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
This white is the best of both worlds. It’s balanced and lush enough to stand up to creamy‐based decadent dishes like pasta Carbonara topped with smoky crumbled bacon, yet delightful enough to sip all on its own. Sweet, succulent crab drizzled with lemon and drawn butter, zucchini, garden fresh tomatoes and basil baked in a flaky crust, grilled shrimp with mango coconut jasmine rice, grilled shrimp and asparagus over lemon linguine. Before or after dinner, enjoy with crudités, olives, honeycomb, cured meats and nutty cheeses.
