6DEC08 Abrigo Giovanni “Marminela” BARBERA, Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont, Italy (F, O)
4 a4 and 6 bottle levels $25 (member price $22)
100% Barbera 14.0% ABV
This is a 3rd generation family owned winery, with their home vineyard located in Diano d’Alba, just east of Barolo. They are also blessed to own some Cru Barolo vineyards. The Abrigo family’s other main crop is hazelnuts. The family’s agricultural start was raising Piedmontese beef cattle. (Some call it Italian Wagyu, and I can still taste carne crudo made with Piedmont beef tenderloin that I sampled in Barolo years ago.) The fruit for this Barbara is from their home vineyard in Diano d’Alba and a vineyard in Grinzane Cavour. Aged in concrete tanks, to keep the freshness while adding depth to the mouthfeel. Wild strawberry, red cherry, fresh thyme, rose petals.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
This excellent food and pasta wine is perfect for everyday quaffing as well. Enjoy a glass with appetizers like wild boar sausage and Taleggio cheese skewers or first course dishes like ravioli drizzled with sage brown butter and Pecorino cheese. This versatile red is also the perfect complement to Parmesan and mushroom‐stuffed flank steak, Italian‐style braised beef pot roast, pasta Bolognese and even barbequed chicken under a brick and roast duck in plum sauce. Save a glass of this easy-drinking red for the cheese course, especially Italian favorites like Fontina, Grana Padano, Piave and Ossau-Iraty.
