6DEC13 Masseria Li Veli “Pezzo Morgana” NEGROAMARO, Salice Salentino Riserva, Puglia, Italy 2021 (F, O)
6 bottle level $30 (member price $27)
100% Negroamaro 15.5% ABV
An internationally renowned economist and member of Parliament of Italy, Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco, established Masseria Li Veli in the late 1800’s. After his passing, the estate gradually declined, until it was purchased in 1999 by the Falvo family, best known for owning Avignonesi. (The VV Tuscany travelers amongst you may recall sipping arguably the world’s greatest Vin Santo at Avignonesi.) Pezzo Morgana is a brawny single vineyard wine just now entering its prime drinking window – or you can hold for 10+ more years before opening. Aged in French oak barriques. Ripe & juicy blackberry, boysenberry, tart red cherry, violets, smoke. Grippy tannins.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Ideal for roasted rosemary and garlic-studded lamb over mint pesto risotto, eggplant Parmesan with linguine, spicy Italian sausage and pancetta pizza, veal shanks over cauliflower puree, veal cheek ravioli with Tuscan sauce, Carne alla pizzaiola, classic Osso Bucco, hearty lasagna Bolognese, pasta primavera, spaghetti topped high with meatballs and shaved Pecorino, tortellini with mushroom and ricotta filling, and Italian style beef stew. Or simply savor this red with ripe aged cheeses such as Pecorino, Parmigiano, Asiago and Grana Padano.
