6FEB10 Tenuta Santa Maria “Pragal” RED BLEND, Veronese Rosso, Veneto, Italy 2022 (F)
4 and 6 bottle levels $22 (member price $19)
60% Corvina, 20% Merlot, 20% Syrah 14.0% ABV
The Bertani family’s Valpolicella heritage dates back to the mid 1500’s. They were the first to bottle and sell wines from the region, as well as the first to use guyot training for their vines. They established Tenuta Santa Maria in the late 1800’s, and are on their 6th generation of family ownership. Pràgal follows a two-track method of winemaking. The Merlot and Syrah are harvested in September and vinified at once. The Corvina is harvested in October, air-dried for a month for partial appassimento, fermented, then aged for six months in large neutral oak barrels. After that, the Corvina is blended with the Merlot and Syrah, then further aged in the bottle before release. The wine still tastes tight, so either wait a year or so to open, or decant for an hour before serving. Black plum, red plum, violet, spicebox.
