6JAN02 Bodega Garzón “Reserva” ALBARIÑO, Garzón, Atlantida, Uruguay 2023 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $23 (member price $20)
100% Albariño 13.5% ABV
Uruguay is just north of Argentina, but the elevation is much lower than that of Mendoza, Salta and other premium regions. The Atlantic Ocean has a bigger influence in moderating the temperatures in Uruguay than of its southern neighbor. This is the 3rd wine we’ve featured from this iconic winery in the past six months. As mentioned earlier, we hope to have a visit by Mele Sosa (their Enologist) in April or May. Bodega Garzón, along with a few other Uruguayan wineries, believes the terroir of coastal Atlantida is similar to that of Rias Baixas (Spain), the worldwide center for Albariño. They have over 100 acres of Albariño planted, the largest acreage outside the Iberian Peninsula. Orange blossom, lemon, white peach, hint of salinity. Aged on the lees in stainless steel.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
This vibrant white is refreshing with lighter dishes like crispy cod drizzled with lemon and capers, barbecued oysters, angel hair pasta lightly tossed in a clammy broth, smoked paprika crusted cod filet with crispy potatoes, roasted eggplant stacks and other seasonal veggies, classic Spanish Paella, grilled chicken stuffed with goat cheese and herbs served over vegetable rice, and all your raw bar favorites. Or simply enjoy it with soft Spanish cheeses like Nata de Cantabria cream, Marjorera goat and Torta de Casar, preferably accompanied by salty slices of Serrano ham and Marcona almonds.
