6JUN11 Tenuta Regaleali “Lamùri“ NERO D’AVOLA, Sicily, Italy 2022 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $24 (member price $21)
100% Nero d’Avola 14.0% ABV
In 1830, the Tasca brothers purchased Tenuta Regaleali, in the Sciafani area of Sicily, about 90 minutes SE of Palermo. This 8th generation family owned winery also cultivates vines in Etna, but Tenuta Regaleali is their flagship estate. Lamùri (“love“ in the Sicilian dialect) represents the Tascas’ love for this native variety. Like Barbera of Piedmont, I believe Nero d’Avola needs some oak to be at its best, and Lamùri is aged 12 months in French oak barrels (20% new and 80% 2nd and 3rd use). Red raspberry, black raspberry, thyme, cinnamon, nutmeg. Lamùri will be featured in our Tour of Italy Tasting with Nicole Andrus (Thursday 6/12). Nicole is a wonderful presenter and the wines (Piedmont, Tuscany, Lazio and Sicily) are delicious.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Serve this fuller-bodied red with regional favorites such as spezzatino di agnello con patate (lamb stew with potatoes), eggplant arancini, spezzatino di vitello (veal stew made with onions, tomato paste and vegetables), braciole alla Sicilian (veal scaloppini filled with olives and capers) and involtini di carne (steak roll-ups stuffed with ham, cheese and pistachios). Or simply enjoy this luscious, ripe red with an antipasti platter complete with marinated mushrooms, prosciutto, Sicilian olives, marinated artichoke hearts and regional cheeses such as Pecorino, Caciocavallo, Vastedda and Canestrato.
