6JUN14 Château de Rouanne “Guérin“ GSM BLEND, Vinsobres, Rhône Valley, France 2020 (F, O)
6 bottle level $30 (member price $27)
50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre 15.5% ABV
Château de Rouanne is a historic estate with a 12th century medieval castle, situated on a classified Roman site located in the southern Rhône Valley. The vineyard of Château de Rouanne is a single block, planted entirely with 50+ year old vines, which are a selection massale of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Guérin is the name of the 2.5 acre lieu-dit. The winery was purchased in 2019 by Louis Barruol of Château de Saint Cosme, whose wines have been some of my favorite Rhône tipples for a decade plus. (Château de Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône continues to be a screaming deal on our retail shelves.) Aged 16 months in concrete tanks. Raspberry, violet, anise, black pepper, gingerbread. At 15.5% ABV, this is a big wine, with a long tannic finish. Châteauneuf-du-Pape drinkers would crush Château de Rouanne.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Serve this blend with roast beef sliced over roasted garlic mashed potatoes, roasted chicken stuffed with spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, herbs de Provence and Parmesan cheese, classic boeuf Provencal, braised lamb shanks with rosemary over creamy polenta, garlic-crusted roast beef tenderloin topped with mushrooms, seared duck breast with caramelized root vegetables and roast turkey with all the trimmings. For an unforgettable after dinner pairing, enjoy a glass of this silky red with warm baked Brie drizzled with fresh herbs and truffle oil or creamy goat cheeses such as Valençay, Crottin de Chavignol and Saint-Maure de Touraine. Don’t forget the charcuterie, olives and garlic toasts!
