6NOV02 Lubanzi Wines CHENIN BLANC, Swartland, South Africa 2023 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $21 (member price $18)
100% Chenin Blanc 12.5% ABV
Lubanzi is named for a wandering dog who led the founders (Americans Charlie Brain and Walker Brown) on a six day / 100-mile hike across South Africa’s wild coast. Along their journey, they found old vine vineyards, and met talented people that would help them turn their winery dreams into reality. I had the pleasure of meeting Walker last year. Swartland (“Black Land”) is north of Capetown, along the Atlantic coast. Lubanzi Chenin Blanc is from dry-farmed 20+ year old vines on a hilltop vineyard that has an excellent view of Table Mountain. Whole cluster fermentation, aged in stainless steel. Ripe peach, apricot, lemon, poppyseed cake. GOBBLE GOBBLE
Food Pairing Suggestions:
This lively, well balanced white pairs perfectly with crispy crab cakes with Remoulade, oysters on the half shell, tuna and avocado tartare, flash fried calamari, Tarte Flambée, Thai chicken salad, roast turkey with a quinoa and green pea salad, herbed pork tenderloin with Almondine topped asparagus, chicken pad Thai, lobster rolls, sweet and sour pork with sticky rice, and honey-glazed chicken wings. Or simply enjoy a glass of this delightful white with a sliver of Bûcheron, Crottin, or Brillat‐Savarin drizzled with honey.
