6SEP10 Tacchino “Buongiorno” RED BLEND, Piedmont, Italy (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $22 (member price $19)
40% Barbera, 40% Dolcetto, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon 14.0% ABV
This is a 3rd generation family owned winery with a twist. The 2nd generation (Luigi Tacchino) was 11 when his father passed away, forcing his mother to sell the family’s vineyards to be able to support her three children. Years later (in 1960), Luigi was able to purchase back the vineyards! The 3rd generation (Romina and Alessio Tacchino) now run the operation. The vineyards are in Alto Monferrato, known for excellent Barbara and Dolcetto. This is a non traditional blend, as Cabernet Sauvignon is not widely planted in Piedmont. Aged in stainless steel for 18 months, then in the bottle for 12 months. Black cherry, red cherry, cranberry, smoke. While the ABV is a robust 14.0%, it drinks more like a 13.0% wine. It’s ripe and juicy; California drinkers would like it.
Food Pairing Suggestions:

This blend is also perfect for enjoying at your end-of-summer gatherings with melted Fontina-topped burgers, barbeque pulled pork or ribs, lamb kebobs, grilled sausage with peppers and other grilled vegetables. You can also serve with wild game like venison drizzled with pomegranate molasses. Try with pumpkin or butternut squash ravioli, or semi-soft cheeses like Havarti, Edam, Gruyere or Jarlsberg.
