6SEP14 Shatter GRENACHE, Maury, Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon, France 2021
6 bottle level $30 (member price $27)
100% Grenache 14.5% ABV
Shatter is a project of Charles Bieler and Joel Gott. The Grenache comes from 60 year old hilside vines from Maury’s famed black schist earth. Tough soil, strong winds and hot days push the vines and cause shatter, or coulure, in the grape clusters, naturally thinning fruit from the vines and producing more intensely concentrated flavors. Half the wine sees six months in used French oak. Black currant, blackberry, black plum, roasted coffee, cured meat. We featured a different vintage of Shatter in club a few years ago. That wine hit you over the head like a hammer; this 2021 vintage is smoother and more elegant. The label (shown here) shows black schist soil.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Savor this rich red with slow-cooked pork with maple bacon roasted Brussels sprouts, wild boar sausage over white Cheddar polenta, French-style venison stew, braised lamb with root vegetables and wild mushroom risotto, rabbit stew, bison burgers smothered with Gorgonzola, caramelized onions and bacon, garlic and herb-peppered veal chops over garlicky smashed potatoes and classic steak au poivre with garlicky braised spinach. Or simply slather some Comte, Brie or creamy Stilton onto garlic-buttered toast.
