4APR02 Vincent Wengier CHARDONNAY, Chablis, Burgundy, France 2022 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $23 (member price $20)
100% Chardonnay 13.0% ABV
Vincent Wengier’s great grandfather was a winemaker in Chablis, as was his grandfather. His father Alain started his namesake winery, and Vincent took over the business in 1998. The label says Bourgogne Blanc, but the fruit is from the village of Préhy in Chablis, the only commune in Chablis to have the Bourgogne appellation. Clay-limestone soil, with the famous Kimmeridgian subsoil. Vincent Wengier produces 1er Cru Vaillons wines, but their Bourgogne Blanc allows them to hit a price point competitive with larger wineries in the region. Aged on the lees in stainless steel for 8-10 months. Ripe green apple, pear, guava, hint of chalk on the finish.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
This classic, minerally white sips deliciously on its own, yet pairs beautifully with raw bar selections like oysters and steamed shrimp, and creamy dishes such as Chanterelle mushroom stuffed chicken breast or chicken crepes smothered with creamy lemon sauce. Enjoy a refreshing glass with first course salads garnished with goat cheese and saucy bouillabaisse or savor a glass after dinner with slivers of Gruyere, Jarlsberg and Epoisses.
