6FEB09 Petit Peyfaures MERLOT BLEND, Bordeaux, France 2016
4 and 6 bottle levels $23 (member price $20)
80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc 14.0% ABV
Château Peyfaures is in the hamlet of Genissac in Entre-deux-Mer, just across the Dordogne River from Saint-Émilion. It was a 7th generation family-owned winery (dating back to 1830) that was sold to another family in 2017. This 2016 wine was the last vintage produced by the Godeau family, although Laurent Godeau has stayed on to help the Moraes family begin this chapter of the winery. Château Peyfaures flagship wine is a Bordeaux Superiéure, with this Petit Peyfaures being their 2nd wine. One third of the wine sees neutral barriques for 12 months, the balance is aged in stainless steel. Red raspberry, red currant, earth, whiff of pyrazines.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Serve this expressive blend with rosemary and garlic roast leg of lamb, porterhouse steak with peppers and caramelized onions, braised beef and mushrooms drizzled with a red wine pan sauce over potato leek hash, braised lamb shoulder with fennel, orange and baby potatoes, bison burgers topped with candied bacon and Roquefort, and black pepper crusted filet with four cheese risotto. Or simply serve this crowd-pleasing blend with a platter of hard, sharp cheeses such as Beaufort, Comté and Emmental.
