4NOV07 Garofoli “Farnio” RED BLEND, Rosso di Piceno, Marche, Italy 2022 (F, O)
4 and 6 bottle levels $21 (member price $18)
70% Montepulciano, 30% Sangiovese 13.0% ABV
Garofoli is a 5th generation family owned winery founded in 1871. Rosso di Piceno is in southern Marche, by the Adriatic, north of Abruzzo and south of Emilia Romagna. They are known not just for reds, but also whites and sparkling wine. Gianfranco Garofoli named this wine after a beautiful mountain pass in Monti Sibillini National Park of southern Marche, above Rosso Piceno. When he stops at this pass (Farnio), he can see the Adriatic and his vineyards below. Like other reds of Piceno, it’s majority Montepulciano, with some Sangiovese included for complexity. Red cherry, red raspberry, black plum. Slightly fuzzy mouthfeel, due to aging in concrete. GOBBLE GOBBLE
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Serve this tangy red with gnochetti Sardi al cinghiale (a Sardinian “tear drop” pasta made with a wild boar ragu); Bucatini del Gennargentu (hollow pasta made with smoked pancetta, caramelized onions and cherry tomatoes in a zesty tomato sauce); Bistecca Fiorentina (Florentine style steak) served over polenta with black truffle; Ribollita (a hearthy Tuscan soup); wood fired veal ribeye served over grilled asparagus; herbed lamb chops with cannellini bean puree; and truffled braised beef ravioli topped with shaved Pecorino. This red is equally delicious with regional aged cheeses such as Pecorino d’Abruzzo, Asiago, and Talamello.
